Of course the Kierkegaard idea is self-contradictory. It appeals to our reason, to consider a way of choosing apart from reason: the person asked to “choose irrationally” is being given reasons why to choose that.

Totally agree. There’s a more sophisticated way around this objection, but it still involves putting forward an argument, so still kind of a dead end.
