Suppose you were in charge of casting for a new version of the Jesus movie. But this time, instead of actors, you have to pick prominent Christian pastors. They don’t have to all be in the same sub movement, so for instance you could mix evangelical with emergent if you want to, but given those options, who would you pick?
The hardest question I think is who will play Jesus, but if I had to pick, my disciples would go something like this:
- Peter = Mark Driscoll (who else?)
- James = John MacArthur
- John = John Piper
- Andrew = Matt Chandler
- Matthew = Tim Keller
- Phillip = Sam Storms
- Bartholomew = Louie Giglio
- Judas = Benny Hinn
- Thaddeus = C. J. Mahaney
- James son of Alphaeus = Kevin DeYoung
- Thomas = Rob Bell
- Simon the zealot = David Platt
- John the Baptist = Douglas Wilson
If there doesn’t seem to be an obvious connection for some of these, it’s because a few a rather arbitrary. Certainly could be parsed out differently, but who would you place where and why? Special props to my wife Ali for thinking of this while we were waiting for church to start. We managed to stay sufficiently focused on the sermon in spite of running names through our heads and trying to figure out who should be placed where.
Maybe later someone should add a professor edition, or a Christian leader edition.
