10 Books on Marriage

[This post is part of the 10 Books On… series]

Consider this post a kind of appendix to yesterday’s non-recommendation of Real Marriage.

While I wasn’t overly optimistic about the value of Real Marriage, I don’t mean to imply that no one should ever read the book. Certainly people in my position should (to evaluate its merits as a book and its value for practical application), but as far as a book for a Christian couple to go through, I think it should be pretty far down your reading list.

What I’d like to suggest then is this list of 10 books on marriage. If you’ve already read all of these and discussed them with your spouse to some extent, then maybe look into reading Real Marriage. If you haven’t, then I say these books are much more worth your time and effort and you should start with one of them.

I would also add that if you’ve read and interacted with the books on this list, there is little that the Driscolls’ can add the discussion other than just giving their own personal perspective. That may not be a bad thing, but just something to realize before banking on the book to deliver on its hype.

We read that for premarital counseling and it was good, but I didn’t really like it as much.

So, since I can only put 10 books on the carousel widget…it didn’t make the cut

Have you read the Kellers’ recent release, The Meaning of Marriage? I just ordered that one for Karla and I to read together. I’m expecting it to be pretty good.

I haven’t read Keller yet, but we’ve got it and I plan to. From what I’ve heard, its pretty stellar!

Nate, wondering if you have read Keller’s book yet and if so, your thoughts? Was thinking about picking that up for my wife and I to go through.

I haven’t, but it’s on my to read list. I’ve only heard good things though, and plan on reading with Ali when I do.
