Sunday Seven: Pizza, Metal, Billions

Starting this week, I’m going to self-conscious rip off Tim Ferriss’ 5-Bullet Friday with my own version. The gist of the idea is that it’s a way for me to share things that I’m enjoying, pondering, or just promoting. Hope you find something interesting!

Recipe I’m using: I probably like pizza too much. But, I also know that is one of the biggest rip-offs to buy from a restaurant. When you get a pizza from a major chain, they maybe spent $1-2 on the ingredients. So, why not do that from the comfort of your own home? I’ve been using a cast-iron skillet and burrito tortillas to make thin crust pepperoni pizza. You can follow this recipe, and get a cast iron skillet if you don’t already have one (use this one). Also, try Vodka sauce instead of marinara.

Album in heavy rotation: One of my emerging favorite bands is Dance Gavin Dance and they dropped a new album a little over a week ago. Here’s a drum playthrough video of the first song on the album:

YouTube channel I’m digging: Speaking of drum playthroughs, I’ve recently subscribed to Garrett Miller’s YouTube channel. He’s a jazz drummer and uploads videos of himself reacting to metal and other progressive rock drum playthroughs. It’s kind of peak music nerd, but I like getting his music theory commentary on things. And I’ve discovered a few new bands in the process. Here’s a good example video, but fair warning, he’s a little salty on the language:

Show I just started binge watching: While stuck at home, we used our Amazon Fire Stick to start a trial of Showtime. With that, I’ve started watching Billions and immediately got hooked. It’s like if Mad Men and Breaking Bad could be the same show, but it was about financial trading and legal issues instead of advertising and cooking meth. The writing is excellent and the storytelling is compelling. The 5th season I think starts tonight, but I’m just barely into season 2.

Book I’m still pondering: Thanks to IVP, I was able to read Chuck DeGroat’s latest book When Narcissism Comes to Church. I’m still wrestling with the implications, but needless to say I highly recommend it. I’ll have a full review at some point, but it’s started me on a journey of self-reflection, as well as provided a tool to make sense of some my own story from the past few years. Also, it may help as I analyze Billions.

Band I recently discovered: Thanks to YouTube rabbit holes, I recently stumbled upon Unprocessed, a German metal band with a fairly unique sound. I found them through this video:

And as a bonus, because you’ve probably wondered what music videos actually sound like, here’s the same video with the audio from the shoot:

Quote I’m reflecting on: I recently also finished reading Christopher West’s Our Bodies Tell God’s Story (highly recommended), in which he quotes Matthew Anderson:

“This is the paradox of the body. The body is a temple, but the temple is in ruins. The incarnation of Jesus affirms the body’s original goodness. The death of Jesus reminds us of its need for redemption. And the resurrection of Jesus gives us hope for its restoration.” (from Earthen Vessels).
